  • Description: I had the amazing opportunity to interview a veteran of the Iraqi war named Shane Ugliono. I was immediately humbled when he walked in with his army greens on and shook my hand. He was incredibly down-to-earth and really kind. He actually showed me the Purple Heart he was given after being injured in combat. Although Shane is only 28 years old, he has been on three tours of duty in Iraq. On his most recent tour, he and four other soldiers were ambushed and Shane was shot multiple times. Only Shane and one other soldier made it out alive. Many veterans are in situations similar to Shane?s ? they are young, an injury is preventing them from getting a job, and they have a family to take care of. I am sure that even the slightest kind gesture is greatly appreciated. We should all be extremely grateful for the tremendous sacrifices that Shane and countless other soldiers have made for us.

  • Description: Every Sunday the media lists the names of American soldiers killed or missing in action in Iraq during the previous week. Unfortunately the conflict in Iraq has gone on for so long that most people do not give these names a second glance. That was the way I had treated everything I heard on the news pertaining to the Middle East until about a year ago when I heard that a former student to my high school, and Eagle Scout that chartered to my Boy Scout troop, had been killed in action while serving in Iraq. First Lieutenant Jeremy E. Ray was only in Iraq for about a month when he was killed by a suicide bomber. When his body was returned home, several scouts from my troop and I lined the street next to Jeremy?s home-church in our class-A scout uniforms. When the vehicle containing Jeremy?s body filed past all of the firemen, police officers, war veterans, Freedom Riders, and Boy Scouts saluted him for his service and sacrifice to his country. As I saluted Jeremy I realized that I could honor his memory more by filming a news story about him as a young man in high school, in Boy Scouts, and the legacy he left behind through those who knew him. I talked one of his elementary school teachers he stayed in touch with, a Boy Scout leader who knew him since he was in fifth grade and his mother and father who agreed to tell me all about their courageous son, his character, and the reasons why he chose to risk his life for his community and country. Jeremy?s story is truly a story of an every-day hero who gave everything he had, including his life, for the people he cared about, the men under his command in Iraq, and the country that he loved so much that he fought and died to protect.

  • Description: Everyday hundreds of flights arrive and depart from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, but two flights are of significant importance. Men and women of the United States Armed Forces, on their way home for break or being deployed, are the passengers on these planes. Groups of people, patriotic music, and hundreds of signs greet soldiers coming home, but what about soldiers who are being deployed, sent off to face the front lines of war to secure our freedom? Who is there to say goodbye to them? A group of volunteers and the people of North Texas have put a spin on the traditional way of supporting our troops.
